Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Office All-in-One Printer Review

by Mark Burnsworth

After being hounded by my assistant for months to replace our aging office printer, I finally relented. After quite a bit of research, I finally settled on the Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Office All-in-One Printer, and let me just say, I wish I had gotten this years ago! Below I’ll go over the features for this printer and my experiences so far after three months of heavy office use.

Overview of the Canon PIXMA MX870

The Canon PIXMA MX870 is capable of 9600 x 2400 max color DPI for documents and photos and uses a convenient 5-color ink system (four are dye-based, the other is a pigment-based black ink). This system works well because you only need to replace the cartridge that runs out, which cuts down on costs and waste. This model also features an integrated 35 sheet duplex auto document feeder, which allows you to scan, copy or fax a stack of documents rather than feeding them in one at a time.

The built in duplex printing mode also allows you to save paper by printing on both sides of the page, without having to turn documents over manually. In addition, the 2.5” LCD screen on this printer is bright and easy to use, allowing quick access to all of the various options.

This printer also features advanced dual color gamut technology, which automatically optimizes original documents and results in copies that are true to the original. Likewise, the auto scan mode automatically detects the type of original for optimal results. Photos are handled in a similar way, where the built in technology instantly categorizes the image, makes corrections and optimizes colors and ambient light to deliver gorgeous lab quality color prints. All of this happens very quickly, thanks to the quick start capabilities, which reduces warm up times considerably over competing models.

Finally, this model features built in wireless and Ethernet capabilities, for maximum flexibility. It also accepts printing tasks directly from memory cards, USB cable, PictBridge enabled devices and an optional Bluetooth unit. Owners of an iPhone or iPod touch can even print directly from their devices using Canon’s free app.

My Experience with the Canon PIXMA MX870

As mentioned earlier, I bought this printer for my small office, and as you can imagine we work with a lot of documents. We’re constantly printing, scanning and faxing applications, contracts, brochures and many other documents, so the printer we chose had to be able to handle a very heavy workload on a daily basis.

The Canon PIXMA MX870 definitely delivers. The wireless feature eliminates the need to run wires everywhere and the all-in-one capability means we don’t have to have multiple devices taking up valuable space in our small office. The duplex feature really saves time on copying, scanning and faxing stacks of documents and we haven’t had a single paper jam yet. The ink usage is also phenomenal and I anticipate saving quite a bit thanks to the 5-cartridge design.

Best of all, the color photo printing capabilities save us time and money compared to sending my assistant to the lab to have photos developed. Now she can just plug in our digital camera and print shots of properties right from our office.

PROS

  • Easy setup — The printer was up and running within 20 minutes, from the time I unboxed it to the time I printed a document. This includes the time it took to install it on two PC desktops and a laptop.
  • All-in-one — Print, copy, scan, fax and photo production capability all in one device is very convenient.
  • Duplex — Huge time saver, automatically prints, scans or copies both sides of the page without intervention.
  • Multiple inputs — You can print wirelessly, over Ethernet, via memory cards, USB or iPhone/iPod.

CONS

  • Initial warm up — The first time we fire it up in the morning the warm up is a little slow (after sitting all night), but the rest of the day warm up is a breeze.
  • Size — This printer is on the larger size, however given that it replaces multiple devices, this isn’t a deal breaker.

The Bottom Line

Overall I am very pleased with the Canon PIXMA MX870. It’s far more cost and time efficient for my office than our old printer and has stood up very well to heavy use day in, day out. I would have no problem recommending this printer to any small business owner or anyone else that would benefit from an all-in-one device.
