Best Large Format Photo Printers – My Top Recommendations
Large format printers are designed to accommodate larger photo sizes. Whether in the professional printing business or into fine arts sales and exhibits, having a high quality large format photo printer is definitely a valuable investment for companies or individuals wanting to print large high-resolution images. When it comes to buying the best large format photo printer, the key in choosing is to determine one’s printing needs.
- Photo Size. Buyers who have a required photo size should look at the dimension size feature for large format photo printers. Typical large format photo printers can normally handle 17 inches or higher in width. For much larger desired prints, wide format photo printers are the way to go. The best wide format photo printer for maps and posters is one that can print for up to 60 inches in width. Depending on the model, some wide format photo printers can be adjusted to print out different sizes of pictures ranging from wallet-sized photos, landscape portraits to poster-sized images.
- Printing quality. Large format printers are equipped with an extended color palette for richer and more realistic images. The measure of picture resolutions when it comes to printers is called DPI (dots per ink). Photographers will most definitely want a quality photo worthy of gallery display. When buyers are looking for printers that can deliver remarkable brilliance in printing quality, a good rule of the thumb to follow is the higher the DPI, the more refined that images appear.
- Features/Benefits. Large format printers often use 8-color, reformulated pigment ink set which includes Red and Orange ink cartridges, allowing for a wider range of colors resulting to more natural looking skin tones, more intense greens and richer blues. Some models with enhanced Gloss Optimizers have Photo and Matte auto switching features allowing it to print both gloss finish images and Matte black ink, enabling it to deliver any type of image on any media type. Along with larger images, some large format printers are also equipped with functions enabling them to print CD and DVD.
Here is a my personal list of the top 3 large format photo printers. You can’t go wrong choosing either one of them:
Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer. Excellent high quality photo printer that produces art gallery worthy prints. It prints photos up to 17″ x 22″ inch and has auto-switching features between matte and glossy papers. I especially love how there are no bronzing issues and it has a small footprint. It’s not extremely big and bulky and it doesn’t use ink really fast as well. This printer is highly recommended for one specific use: printing out your digital photos and framing them on the wall. I LOVE using the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 for this purpose and have put up many of my own photographs on the walls because they just look so good.

Canon Pixma PRO9500MkII Inkjet Photo Printer Review. I love Canon photo printers because they are so reliable in terms of photo quality and the Canon Pixma PRO9500MKII is no exception. This produces gorgeous borderless prints up to 13″ x 19″ sizes using the award winning LUCIA ink system. It also has a built-in auto correction feature which analyzes images and makes ambient light/color adjustments. I love the two way paper feeding feature and how it produces archival quality prints. Great large format photo printer with a quality design.

Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer. This is a versatile photo printer which produces prints in sizes ranging from 4″ x 6″ to 13″ x 19″. It uses a small amount of ink and prints really fast even it comes to the large prints. It’s also quiet and its very well designed. It works better on color photos than black and white photos so if you’re going to be printing a good deal of black and white pictures, go for the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 instead. Otherwise, this is a great value-for-money printer!
